Beethoven wrote symphonies while still a young child. The fathers of the US Constitution were educated at home, and could read and write in Latin and other languages.
Today’s children have the full knowledge of mankind in their hand, yet can’t read their native language at an 8th grade level.
Our education system hasn't made any significant changes in forever. Being run by the government, it will never change. Every point you make is correct. My wife is a 3rd grade educator and has students who can't read. Some don't even know how to hold a book correctly. Parents just want their kids to go to the next grade with their friends. Because we are chasing the almighty dollar to feed the government beast, we mindlessly ship our kids off to government schools which are more like daycare centers and look like prisons. As a side note one of my son's teaches reading at the high school level to students who still can't read... Home schooling is a great alternative as the current method of indoctrinating our children is creating mind-numbed robots. The only concern is many parents aren't actively involved in the education of their child so homeschooling them could be a recipe for disaster.
No doubt homeschooling is better (and I’ve seen the results in the workplace too.) So, why do we spend too many tax dollars on the Department of Education (DOE)? When a federal program causes harm to a country, wouldn’t that be the signal to change course? Getting rid of the DOE is low-hanging fruit that would be a good place to start dismantling the corrupt and wasteful federal government.
100% agree! Teachers unions would squeal like pigs if you throttle their cash-cow! I’d love to see it. Maybe then we could figure out how to weed out the crazy teachers who are more interested in ideology than actually teaching, and pay the good teachers a decent wage!
Getting rid of the dept of education is so obvious. Based on what I've seen, the cost of compliance (teaching indoctrination, paperwork/reporting, and special positions required by the feds, but not needed by students or even teachers) is higher than what states receive from the feds. It us 100+% waste.
This article is on point. I’ve been a public school teacher and home schooled my daughter—so much waste in the public school system. I once heard an educator say our public schools are for the high achievers and the very low achievers, the rest get lost in the cracks. Maybe things would be different if our government would get out of the schools and let teachers teach and let the parents demand accountability.
Bingo! Any time the government is involved, it’s bound to fail. Look at the Head Start program. Remember that one? Great in theory but how effective was it really once bureaucrats got involved. Teachers are notoriously underpaid, so where is all that money going? Not to the children, not to the teachers, not to the supplies needed….so where’s the money???
Basically because the parents are emotionally invested in the child’s education. Similar reasoning behind the better results of private school children.
Another reason is more direction towards education basics and not society’s flavour of the month.
Parents of public school children as well. IF the parents are invested, their children benefit.
That said, the pandemic showed without a doubt that even invested parents may make poor teachers. Many parents left to manage their kids' educations during lockdowns were terrible at it. Sadly, a lot of homeschooling parents are terrible at it too, and for the same reasons.
In the education wars, everyone defends his or her choice and its matching tribe. Fact is, all the tribes have winners and losers. There are great public schools and lousy homeschools. Saying one is better than the other is usually a warping of reality.
Some schools have done the impossible by replacing the school board during elections and tried to get back to teaching the old way but then the government steps in and threatens to cut funding and that is when you get a rise in private schools.
I know this is an anecdote, but we homeschooled our four children over 23 years. All have college degrees. One is a doctor. Two others have masters degrees (an architectural designer and an actuary). The last is a programmer. All making good money and well-adjusted (two happily married with kids, two looking). Homeschooling works!
If the federal government is involved, it's headed for the lowest common denominator. Schooling, healthcare, energy production, food safety, technological innovation - anything touched by the feds is declining steadily.
Those kids spend more time with trashy kids, and horrible teachers, learning anything but education. They come home with different mentalities, lice, viruses, and very confused with their sexuality that's to that society build and paid by the feds. I got 2 kids and will definitely be at home schooled.
I'm all for home schooling, although it's hard for some folks to work out the logistics of coordinating with their jobs, and there is an extra expense for materials. Joining a group of other homeschoolers can help.
Homeschooling is one of the best things I've done. My kids are more academically prepared, they live learning, and we are very close.
My eldest is super lifted, but had/has trouble with figures of speech and handwriting. I was able to make the most of his strengths and help him compensate for his weaknesses. He took classes at the local community college and graduated highschool just shy of his AA degree. He made a 35/36 on the ACT and now has free tuition and is a straight A student at college getting a double major in computer science and math.
My youngest has down syndrome. I started homeschooling him later because a husband and wife I knew and trusted were his teachers 3-8 grade. As good as they were, he us doing better at home because they had divided attention between lots if kids (with helpers). I ficus know him and customize my teaching exactly for his strengths, weaknesses, and interests. Because my son's are opposites, I had to find completely opposite resources and curriculums, but he is progressing faster than in government schools being taught by specialist.
I am so glad I decided to home school.
FYI, originally I thought I'd homeschool elementary school, maybe Jr high and not high school. I've since come to the conclusion, that I am more comfortable with government schools teaching the basics, like reading, and then taking over once they have basics and potentially are more likely to be able to work on their own. (Still work with them. Learning new things, relearning things you forgot, and unlearning lies you were taught is a joy.)
The older ages have much worse indoctrination and are worse about killing the love of learning.
The question we always ask about performing better is "performing better at what?" To the extent that public schools have turned into woke laboratories, perhaps public school kids are performing better at knowing woke propaganda.
Sane people like UNSKOOL and those reading this article know that woke will not get one very far in life, although there is Soros money available for "activists." Homeschooling strikes me as an excellent alternative, if the parents want the child to be a capable, high integrity citizen.

and cannot write their name in cursive
Fortunately, my children attended parochial schools, where cursive is still required.
I joined a parish to help my grandbabies get in :)
Keep a close eye on them still, some teachers with radical ideas still manage to find their way in.
Granny is always watching!! Thanks, George! May peace and blessing follow you today and everyday.
tell em goerge tell em.

"Being run by the government, it will never change"
Unfortunately, it does change. It keeps getting worse!
forever worst
Great point. and it keeps requiring more of our money to get worse.

Think of the taxes saved if we all home schooled our children, whatever did they do before? I think everyone was home schooled...

I think home schooling is more successful and has a higher completion rate cause it's less stressful and more relaxed at home.
The kids have a higher interest level compared to being at school with more distractions and headaches.
ID recommend homeschooling for everybody.

I wrote about homeschooling here - https://alchristie.substack.com/p/private-schools-and-homeschooling? AnswersinGenesis.com has lots of good material for homeschoolers.
Yes.. more individual attention and discussion..

And they’ll keep outperforming as long as there’s no government influence, meaning if we don’t get the government to pay for it.
